Industry Foundation Classes (IFC):
Development of HVAC Interoperability Standards for Computer Assisted Design

Goal Statement:
To extend Industrial Foundation Classes (IFC) schemata to support the modeling and simulation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) components and systems in various IFC-compatible building simulation tools (such as EnergyPlus). This extension will facilitate the seamless importing of information from upstream applications and databases (such as general definitions and performance specifications of HVAC equipment and furnishings). It will also facilitate the seamless exporting of generated information to downstream tools, such as facilities management tools.

Results:

The IFC modeling work has been accelerated and as such was completed during the second year. This included the definition of all needed object/attribute/relationship sets and coding in the EXPRESS modeling language of all the IFC extension schemata. It also included the development of the EnergyPlus Client for the BS Pro COM Server. This has allowed us to pursue market connections with software implementors one year earlier than originally planned.
