Building Energy Data Exchange Specification

Building Energy Data Exchange Specification

A dictionary of terms and definitions for consistent data transformation between application datasets.

The Building Energy Data Exchange Specification (BEDES) is a dictionary of terms and definitions commonly used in tools and activities that help stakeholders make energy investment decisions, track building performance, and implement energy efficient policies and programs. An ecosystem of BEDES-compliant applications will facilitate the exchange of information on building characteristics and energy use.

The BEDES Dictionary contains a common set of terms and definitions for building characteristics, efficiency measures, and energy use which can be used to support the analysis of the energy performance of buildings. The terms and definitions in this BEDES Dictionary were taken from a variety of sources in order to be as complete as possible as well as being inclusive of the existing implementations that characterize the energy use in buildings.

The BEDES Mapping Manager is a web-based tool to support the development of BEDES-compliant applications. It can be used to explore the BEDES dictionary, combine BEDES terms into standardized composite terms, and create mappings from application-specific terms to composite terms.

We encourage all stakeholders to participate in the continued development and adoption of BEDES, and welcome your feedback. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, email us [email protected].

COMPLIANCE

BEDES is a dictionary of standard terms and definitions that can be used as the basis for standardized data transformation between application datasets. To leverage the power of BEDES, and to support data standardization, please consider making your application BEDES-compliant. For more about the benefits of BEDES compliance, see this document: BEDES-Compliant Applications.

There are two different paths for compliance: Mapping and Exchange. Mapping compliance documents the relationships between the native terms and definitions used in an application and their associated BEDES terms. Exchange compliance takes Mapping compliance one step further by establishing a schema for exchanging that information electronically.

For more guidance on how to create a mapping, see this document: BEDES Mapping Procedure.

Interested in developing a BEDES-compliant application? The BEDES team is available to provide guidance and technical assistance with developing mappings and checking compliance. To take advantage of this opportunity, email us at [email protected].

WORKING GROUP

The stakeholders listed below have contributed to the development of BEDES as early adopters by creating BEDES-compliant products and by participating in stakeholder meetings and forum discussions. The BEDES team is grateful to the contributions that everyone has made to date and looks forward to this group continuing to support the ongoing evolution of BEDES.

For general updates on BEDES or to be notified about future working group meetings, email us at [email protected].
