Collage of various images associated with Sustainable Design for Federal Buildings research including: the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, U.S. Green Building Council, FEMP, Whole Building Design Guide and Energy Star logos, the Capitol Building and the White House.

Motivation / Problem Statement

Legislation and executive orders require sustainable design and operation of federal buildings. Widespread adoption of sustainable design/construction metrics can help drive significant energy/water efficiency improvements in federal facilities. Federal market leadership can spur market transformation.

Activities / Approach

Coordination/dissemination of federal agency sustainable construction policies leads to adoption of best practices throughout government. Energy/water efficiency becomes "standard practice" in federal new construction. Metrics established to evaluate progress.

Accomplishments / Outcomes

Adoption of sustainable construction design standards and implementation performance metrics, including recent inter-agency MOU on high-performance sustainable buildings and OMB scorecard changes.

Future / Follow-on

Develop implementation guidance for MOU. Incorporating sustainability into DOE's TEAM Initiative

Relationship to Other Projects

New technologies to meet sustainability goals.
