Motivation / Problem Statement

ENERGY STAR® needs to periodically update and improve its specifications for office equipment and other plug loads (e.g., water coolers); ENERGY STAR Buildings recognizes plug loads as a major driver of energy growth.

Activities / Approach

Estimate savings potential of changes to ENERGY STAR® product specifications; Provide technical info for negotiations with industry; Collect field data on office equipment and plug-load usage.

Accomplishments / Outcomes

Participated in >10 specifications revisions; Documented low power-management rates in commercial buildings; Estimated plug-load energy use breakdown by equipment type.

Future / Follow-on

Working on PC and imaging specifications.
