Establishing Control of Building Ventilation

Collage of various images associated with Establishing Control of Building Ventilation including: bar and scatter charts, a diagram illustrating airflow eddies downstream of louvers, and a diagram illustrating backwards airflow through a portion of an outdoor airflow damper.

Motivation / Problem Statement

Commercial ventilation uses ~1 Quad/year. Minimum ventilation rates very poorly controlled and, in offices, normally exceed code requirements.

Activities / Approach

Evaluate technologies for real-time measurement of outdoor air intake → a key to effective control.

Accomplishments / Outcomes

Test protocol developed, four technologies evaluated (lab and field); Identified two commercial technologies that can work well; Patent application.

ASHRAE papers with guidance for technology selection, utilization, and improvements.

Future / Follow-on

Will seek non-DOE $ to complete.
