Reducing Ventilation Energy with Air Cleaning

Collage of various images associated with Reducing Ventilation Energy with Air Cleaning research including: UV photocatalytic oxidation (UVPCO) reactor schematic, UVPCO reactor, scientific equation, ATR: Attenuated total reflexion flow cell schematic, and 28 VOCs typical of office buildings

Motivation / Problem Statement

Commercial ventilation uses ~1 Quad/year. Advanced air cleaning for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could reduce ventilation requirements and save ~50% of ventilation energy.

Activities / Approach

Partnering with industry to develop and evaluate advanced air cleaning technology for VOCs.

Accomplishments / Outcomes

Evaluated VOC air cleaner prototypes, identified necessary improvements.

Future / Follow-on

Improve, test, demo VOC air cleaning systems.

Relationship to Other Projects

Data for future NREL analyses.
