Ventilation Performance of UFAD

Collage of various images associated with Ventilation Performance of UFAD research including: bar charts, close-up of an underfloor air distribution (UFAD) vent, an office with a UFAD vent, a diagram illustrating the air quality and temperature advantages of using UFAD, a cross-section of an UFAD.

Motivation / Problem Statement

Rapid increase in use of underfloor air distribution (UFAD); Ventilation benefits claimed but not documented.

Activities / Approach

Field study in DOE High Performance Building.

Accomplishments / Outcomes

Unique field data on air change effectiveness → not improved by UFAD.

Thermal stratification quantified; new metrics for quantifying energy benefits of stratification.

Future / Follow-on

None anticipated.

Relationship to Other Projects

Part of broader DOE evaluation of high performance commercial buildings.
