Dynamic Window System Performance

Collage of various images associated with Dynamic Window System Performance research including: A Radiance simulation, the appearance of the electrochromic (EC) window when switching from clear to tinted, a line chart, exterior views of prototype EC windows, a diagram of a typical tungsten-oxide electrochromic coating, a diagram of EC windows with manually-operated wall switches and EC controllers located in an electrical closet., and EC windows in a fully colored state (left column), intermediate tinted state (middle column), and clear bleached state (right column.

Motivation / Problem Statement

Emerging electrochromic (EC) windows require integrated systems engineering to achieve energy-efficiency and demand control.

Activities / Approach

Field test prototype systems, assess benefits, create optimal control strategies, accelerate market deployment by reducing A/E and owner costs and performance risk.

Accomplishments / Outcomes

Unique façade test facility; Large energy and demand savings from EC windows (50%) if properly controlled; new optimized control strategies and assessment techniques.

Future / Follow-on

Develop control algorithms and systems for near-term dynamic window systems with industry, with NY Times, B of A, WTC, ....

Relationship to Other Projects

Daylighting Quality, Advanced Façades
