Integrated Façade-Daylighting

Collage of various images associated with Integrated Façade-Daylighting research including: exterior façade of the daylighting mockup, architectural rendering of the New York Times Headquarters Building, close-up of the daylighting sensor network, a closer view of the exterior, equipment used to monitor daylighting, average luminance levels measurements, and a line chart.

Motivation / Problem Statement

Large daylighting potentials not achieved; inadequate design guidance re: energy/comfort, high system costs, lack of reliable commissioning.

Activities / Approach

Owner driven testbed program; Field test prototype systems, assess benefits, create optimal control strategies, performance specs, CX solutions, accelerate market deployment by reducing owner costs and performance risk.

Accomplishments / Outcomes

Largest integrated daylighting/automated shade installation in US; new affordable systems on market; new tools for assessment and CX.

Future / Follow-on

Improve tools; extend to other buildings.

Relationship to Other Projects

Dynamic Window System Performance, Advanced Lighting Controls
