Sam is a program manager in the Buildings Technology and Urban Systems Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has a Bachelors and Masters degree in Engineering, a project management certification and is currently a PhD student in the Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate Science Program in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at UC Berkeley. He is a fellow at the Clean Energy Leadership Institute (CELI). His research interest domains include energy efficiency, risk assessment during extreme events and the climate-energy-health nexus in the built environment. His research methodologies include remote sensing, computer vision, computational fluid dynamics, machine learning and control of dynamical systems. He has worked on a diverse set of projects including using energy management information systems to improve building energy performance, developing low-cost highly-accurate measurement and verification techniques and leveraging advances in remote sensing, machine learning and data-driven approaches to reduce the climate impact of the built environment. He has also been involved in technology commercialization through past work in an early stage technology start-up and successfully commercializing LBNL developed technology.
