Abstract

50001 Ready, a globally recognized energy management framework that aligns with ISO 50001, has proven to help manufacturers reduce costs and meet their energy goals. To help support and grow an energy management workforce familiar with 50001 Ready and ISO 50001, we published two courses designed for higher education institutions that can be used in an academic or workplace setting (navigator.lbl.gov/training). Several universities have successfully integrated the course into their engineering curriculum, demonstrating its value by bridging the gap between energy engineering and energy management. The two-week course helps participants become familiar with 50001 Ready, while the four-week course provides a more in-depth understanding that will help participants work towards an energy manager in-training certification. Both courses offer certificates of completion from the U.S. Department of Energy to help participants be more competitive in the job market. During the course pilot, more than 50 students received course completion certificates. Interest in the curriculum outside of academia has also led to a large electric and gas utility adapting the materials for virtual customer training. In this presentation we will highlight the success of these courses, the process used for developing the courses, and how our process could be replicated to create additional training that supports industrial competitiveness and the evolving energy landscape within and outside the academic environment.
